Amid Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine, Toyota announced it will permanently end vehicle manufacturing operations at its plant in Saint Petersburg. This factory was the only one Toyota owned in Russia, and it has been closed since March of this year – right after the war began.
In the statement from Toyota released in September, the company sees no indication of restarting operations anytime soon, thus making the closure permanent. According to the car manufacturer, employees affected by the closure will receive assistance for re-employment, training for new skills, and “well-being, including financial support above legal requirements.”
The construction of the Saint Petersburg facility began in 2005, and production was launched in 2007. Toyota used to assemble in Russia the Camry and the RAV4. The plant’s capacity was around 100,000 units a year. The cars were sold primarily in Russia, and some models were exported to Belarus.
