Daimler has published the first batch of official photos with the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster which will premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt on September 13th, 2011.
This soft top version is still slightly disguised, with black camo covering the headlights and taillights as well as the automaker’s logos, but the area that has changed when compared to the coupe version, is clearly visible. Gone are the Gullwing doors, as the metal roof has been replaced with a fabric top, and in order to maintain rigidity the automaker has paid extra attention on reinforcing the chassis and adding a series of enhancements that would help maximise safety in case of a crash.
The automaker’s specialists in Affalterbach have also focused on handling dynamics and the necessary measures demanded by a soft top in terms of noise, vibration and harshness.
Just like the coupe the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster will continue to develop 571 hp (420 kW) and 650 Nm of torque. Top speed will limited to 317 Km/h while the three-layered fabric soft top which uses a combination of magnesium/steel/ aluminium can fold or unfold from behind the rear seats in just 11 seconds while traveling at a speed of up to 50 Km/h.
The Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster is just a few Kilos heavier than the coupe which means fuel consumption figures will remain almost unchanged.
