According to Tobias Moers, AMG chief, the current 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG could get a more hardcore version in 2014. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG is having a 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged unit that is able to deliver 360 horsepower.

According to Tobias Moers, the car has more potential. Although a Black Series version won’t get the green light in the near future, the AMG chief admitted a more hardcore variant of the pocket rocket based on the Racing Series could be released sometime next year.

"Next year will be better. Maybe we will do something for the street out of the CLA45 Race but that is not a priority right now", said Moers.

Moers also couldn’t dismiss the shift to downsizing engines may force AMG to adapt the 265kW/450Nm four-cylinder – which produces more power but less torque than the company’s 5.4-litre V8 did a decade ago (260kW/530Nm) – from its front-drive transverse (east-west) layout into a conventional application so it can be fitted to vehicles above those based on the A-Class platform.

"That is part of the strategic discussion for the future and that is not just a Mercedes or AMG trend, downsizing is something that is facing everyone in the automotive industry", he said.

"What we have in the east-west application in the A, maybe it is possible for the future to have this engine in a north-south application. There is nothing decided or under development, but that’s what we have to discuss", said Moers.
