Mazda has unveiled the MX-30 Skyactiv-R EV, a plug-in hybrid version of its first mass-produced electric car. Under the hood of this particular version is a rotary engine which act like a range extender.
And this is big, because Mazda restarts the rotary engine mass production after 11 years of break. Coincidentally – or not – the RX-8 went out of production 11 years ago, in June 2012.
The new rotary engine is made in Japan at the company’s Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima.
Mazda has a history with this kind of rotary motor. The first application of it was in the 1967 Cosmo Sport 110S, and after that it became famous with the RX line-up.
