Besides the i8 the German company has also unveiled the BMW i3 today, a rear wheel-drive electric hatchback with zero emissions which was initially called the MegaCity and which will also be shown in Frankfurt this fall.
The BMW i3 is based on a lightweight architecture which makes use of both aluminium and carbon fiber reinforced plastic, and underneath the car’s body, the automaker has placed the Drive module which incorporates the battery, the suspension and the drivetrain.
The lithium-ion battery pack which feeds the electric engine positioned above the rear axle has also been placed underneath the car, and according to BMW the i3 is capable of developing 170 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque via a single speed transmission.
The BMW i3 sprints from 0 to 62 mph in less than 8 seconds and can hit a limited top speed of 93 mph. Due to its compact propulsion module, the i3 can offer a decent amount of space to up to four passengers, while its luggage compartment can accommodate up to 200 litres worth of luggage. The cabin makes use of natural fibers and leather and features a range of new technologies that aim at preventing accidents and reduce stress.
