Frank Niederlaender, BMW’s head of product management for the lower model range, told in an interview for Automotive News that the Bavarian company estimates around 75% of 2-Series Active Tourer buyers will be first-time BMW customers.

In our opinion, the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is the most controversial Bavarian model because it’s not a typical BMW. It feature a front-wheel drive system and it is a mini MPV.

The BMW 2-Series Active Tourer will be offered with three- and four-cylinder engines that can top out 231 horsepower in the 225i. Even though an M Sport version is available, it’s not enough to attract the regular BMW buyer looking for sportiness rather than practicality.

According to the German officials, with the 2-Series Active Tourer, BMW is aiming to win customers that up until now used to buy the Mercedes-Benz B-Class and Volkswagen Touran.
