Audi marks the 40th anniversary since the original introduction of the five-cylinder engine. It was 1976 when the second-generation Audi 100 received the first five-cylinder engine. The unit was based on the EA 827 engine concept and was born because Audi wanted an up marketed model. This is why the engineers had to decide if they will come with an inline six-cylinder or with an inline five-cylinder engine. After long nights, they have decided to develop the five-cylinder unit.
The fuel-inject engine has 2.1 liters and developed 136 horsepower at 5.700 rpm and 185 Nm peak of torque at 4.200 rpm. Two years later, Audi come with a carbureted version that had 1.9 liters and was able to offer 115 horsepower at 5.400 rpm and 154 Nm peak of torque at 3.700 rpm. In 1979 the five-cylinder engine gained a turbocharger and it was installed on the 200 5T model. The unit was able to deliver 170 horsepower and 265 Nm peak of torque.
Engineers continued to work and they have also installed an intercooler. As a result, the 2.1 liter engine can offer 200 horsepower and 285 Nm peak of torque. The crème de la crème come out in 1980 with the launch of the legendary quattro model. In rally specification for Group B, the 2.1-liter engine delivered 360 horsepower and 450 Nm peak of torque.
