The German car maker has published a documentary video in which it presents how their quattro all-wheel-drive system was born and how it evolved over time.
The first Audi featuring the quattro technology which means ‘four’ in Italian, was introduced 30 years ago in 1980 and the original model is also known as the Ur-Quattro, with the first generations S4 and S6 models also reffered to as the Ur-S4 and Ur-S6.
The most advanced quattro system today, can now be found on the new Audi RS5, which features the crown-gear center differential that is able to vary the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles. By default the quattro system on the Audi RS5 send 60 percent of the power to the rear wheels and 40 percent to the front.
