Shortly after the unveiling of the Prius PHEV in Europe, Toyota published the first pictures and details of the US variant. Unlike the European variant, the US one will continue to offer a conventional hybrid, and a PHEV variant.

The fifth generation Prius runs on TNGA-C platform and the hybrid is 2 inches shorter and one inch wider compared to the current model. This time, Toyota placed the battery under the rear seats in order to improve the boot size and the to lower the center of gravity.

The Prius comes with a larger 2.0 liter engine and a new Li-Ion battery that offers a 15% increase in output. The total output is 194 HP. The car manufacturer expects to see a combined fuel economy rating of up to 57 miles per gallon after the EPA rating.

The PHEV variant will use the same configuration as the European version. A 2.0 liter petrol unit and an electric motor for a total of 196 HP.
