With the occasion of launching the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W03 car in Barcelona, Spain yesterday, Daimler has decided to take the new 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG out for its first public appearance.
Scheduled to premiere at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in a couple of weeks, the 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG is differentiated from the new SL which was unveiled in Detroit around two months ago by its sportier looking bumpers and side sills, the trapezoidal shaped exhaust pipes, the small rear spoiler and the 10-spoke design 19 inch wheels that use performance tires and house an uprated braking system.
There are also the re-tuned suspension and of-course AMG’s M157 twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 engine which is capable of producing 529 bhp and 590 lb-ft of torque, figures which translate into 4.2 seconds from 0 to 60 mpg and a limited top speed of 155 mph.
As usual the an AMG Performance Package is also offered as optional, and in this case it raises the output to 550 bhp and 664 lb-ft of torque and improves performance to 4.1 seconds when accelerating from 0 to 60 mph, and increases the top speed of 186 mph.
The 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG uses a 7-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission to set the rear wheels into motion, and due to the usage of aluminium and magnesium in the construction of its body-shell, the new model now weights 275 lb less than its predecessor.
The new SL is also around 30 percent more fuel efficient than the outgoing model as it returns 28.5 mpg in a combined cycle, while CO2 emissions have dropped from 328 to 231 grams per Km.
