The South Korean car maker has unveiled the turbocharged version Hyundai Veloster at the 2012 NAIAS, so here are the official photos and initial details in reference with this ‘angrier’ looking version.
The 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, officially declared a competitor against models like the Volkswagen Golf GTI, MINI Cooper S and Honda Civic Coupe Si, will come fitted with a new 1.6-litre direct-injection gasoline engine featuring a twin scroll turbocharger under the bonnet, so customers should expect it to develop 201 HP at 6,000 rpm and 264 Nm (195 lb-ft) of torque between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm.
If you do the math it means the Turbo version packs an additional 63 HP over the standard model, with this extra power also enabled by the fact that the car comes with a new engine manifold and a less restrictive exhaust system.
A 6-speed manual transmission will be offered as standard on the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, but a 6-speed automatic with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters is also going to be available.
Performance figures remain unspecified at this point, however the Korean company claimed the manual Veloster Turbo is estimated to deliver 27 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.
The Veloster Turbo’s suspension remains unchanged, but some key components in the steering were upgraded, while in terms of dimensions this new version is 1.2 inches longer and 0.6 inches wider than the regular model.
In terms of appearance the 2013 Veloster Turbo is easily recognizable due to its Matt Grey exterior finish, the 18 inch wheels featuring chrome inserts, LED enhanced headlamps and taillights, the more aggressive looking front fascia and the centrally positioned dual exhaust.
Pricing for the Veloster Turbo was not announced, but the car will go on sale across the US next summer.
