The German automaker has just unveiled the third generation Beetle, a car which will be on display at this year’s Shanghai and New York Auto Shows and which will go on sale across the US in 2011 (2012 for the rest of the world’s markets).

The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle lost some of its round shapes, mainly due to the restyled bumpers, and besides the overall retro look, the new version also features LED headlamps and tail lights, a lower roof line, restyled alloys and a completely new interior.

If compared to the previous generation, the 2012 Volkswagen Bettle is 15.2 cm longer and 8.4 cm wider , is able to fit 310 liters worth of luggage and under the bonnet customers will be able to fit the automaker’s new 2.0-litre TFSI and TDI engines for which specifications will differ depending on the market.

The North American market will get a 2.0-litre TDI developing 140 HP through a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual clutch automatic plus a 2.0-litre TSI capable of producing 200 HP which will be offered with either a six-speed manual or a six speed DSG. Customers in the U.S. will also get a second gasoline plant, comprising of a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder plant which packs 170 HP.

On the rest of the world’s markets the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle will use either a 105 HP 1.2-litre TSI, a 160 HP 1.4-litre TSI or a 200 HP 2.0-litre TSI. The diesel range will offer two 1.6-litre TDIs (105 HP or 140 HP).

The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle price was not announced yet.
