The Blue Oval has unveiled the 2012 Ford EcoSport, a small SUV designed for the Indian market.
The car is fitted with a small 1.0-litre 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine which promises to offer the same performance as a conventional 1.6-litre unit but with CO2 emissions below 140 g/Km. The output level on this new EcoSport will be 120 PS and 170 Nm of torque, figures which will be transformed into motion through a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The engine in the 2012 Ford EcoBoost is the smallest member of the automaker’s global family of EcoBoost engines, and apart from India, this unit will be ultimately become available in other Ford models on markets such as China, Europe and North America.
Joe Bakaj, vice president, Global Powertrain Engineering said that "The capable EcoSport is a perfect showcase for the advanced
small-displacement petrol engine, demonstrating the strength and breadth
of Ford’s development and engineering capabilities,"
"The 1.0-litre EcoBoost delivers great low-speed responsiveness, power,
torque and smoothness. To produce an engine with such impressive
performance and fuel economy clearly reflects our commitment to be
class-leading in fuel economy around the world."
Other interesting facts about this all-new EcoBoost engine are that it features an exhaust manifold cast straight into the cylinder head in order to help lower the temperature of the exhaust gases, it also has an advanced "split cooling" system which reduces fuel consumption by warming the engine more quickly.
Just like the larger-capacity siblings, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost unit uses twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) plus an all-new camshaft actuator to speed up response times without sacrificing durability.
In terms of design the all new EcoSport features a aerodynamically sculpted, contemporary aspect, with SUV design elements, a high-mounted grille and an overall robust look.
