Volkswagen press release :
Volkswagen power returns to the British motorsport scene for 2010 as
two highly competitive racing series get underway at Oulton Park in
Cheshire over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend (3-5 April).
The Volkswagen Racing Cup celebrates its 10th season with a
confirmed grid of 28 drivers for the single make championship, while
three teams will compete for the coveted 2010 Cooper Tires British F3
International Series with nine Dallara-Volkswagens.
Promising another exciting season, the Volkswagen Racing Cup with
Fuchs Lubricants series will be fought over 14 rounds and will visit
some of the UK’s best-loved circuits. The championship will share five
race meetings with the British F3/GT calendar before the season finale
at Donington Park in October.
The starting grid for the 2010 Volkswagen Racing Cup comprises some
iconic Volkswagen models from the company’s history and includes the
new Scirocco, a ‘Herbie’-liveried Beetle RSI and various examples of
the Golf GTI. Also, among the 28 drivers will be Simon Elliott,
Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, who makes his debut behind
the wheel of the crowd-pleasing diesel-powered Caddy Racer van.
Commenting on his debut, Elliott explained: ‘The Volkswagen Racing
Cup is a fantastic championship to be involved with and I cannot wait
to get out on track. During the year we visit some fantastic circuits
and with such a wide range of vehicles and drivers making up this
year’s grid, the season is sure to provide some fantastic
entertainment.’
The British F3 International series has undergone a significant
change to the format for the 2010 season, comprising 30 races over 10
weekends and taking in some of the UK and Europe’s most famous racing
circuits. These include Magny-Cours, Hockenheim, Spa-Francorchamps and
two visits to the home of the British Grand Prix, Silverstone.
The 2009 championship winning team Carlin continues its relationship
with Volkswagen for a second year, with six entries for the new
season. Following a switch in engine suppliers over the winter break,
Buckinghamshire-based Hitech Racing will line up with two grid slots
using Volkswagen Power; while Alex Brundle, son of former Formula 1
racer and BBC commentator Martin, races for the third
Volkswagen-partner team, T-Sport International.
